Sun Pup Records is the name of the music project I started. My name is David Schwerdtfeger, and I have been playing and writing music for around 30 years.
This project was the result of growing tired of trying to find other musicians in my area that wanted to write and work on original music. A lot of local musicians my age want to play in cover bands, specifically country and 90's bands. I would prefer to be an original band.
I decided it was time to stop waiting for other people, and started writing lyrics as well as try singing for the first time. I have been writing music for a long time, but would typically collaborate with a lyricist. I also never focused on singing before.
Sun Pup Records started as an experiment to push myself to try new things musically. At this time, all instruments are played by me with the exception of drums. The majority of the songs have been written and composed by me, with a few exceptions where I have been able to collaborate with someone else.
Prior to this project, I was one of the guitarists in a central Iowa jam band, Twistin' Trees, and prior to that the guitarist in a heavily Weezer inspired band. I have been able to provide guitar work to a few other projects through the years, but between 2005 and 2022 I lost my focus. Sun Pup Records is my newly regained focus on music and just doing what I love.
Why call it Sun Pup Records? The project is named after my dog, Leela, who loves to relax in the sun. She's the best pup.
